cyber identities constitute an alternative to ‘normal social reality’ but to a certain extent, yes people can gather in a forum group and be called a community but they are not really together each person is individually sat at their work station and the most effective form of communication according to Socrates in Walter Ong’s book Orality is the spoken word because memory can store this for longer than written word. Some of the identities that people adopt online can be in the forms of animals or fictional creatures and live in fictional worlds whereby language is not expressed in letters or symbols but rather by code.

I'm not quite sure what your point about orality and being online is?
ReplyDeleteContrary to Socrates, I'd say that orality demands memorising, whereas writing provides an alternative to 'learning by heart'. If you ever had to learn a poem or speech by heart from the page, you'll remember it far longer than anything you just listened to. Writing as 'meaning storage' lasts far longer than anyone's memory.
